A little about the instructor…

After growing up in Coleman, Michigan, Sylvia Methner Coon moved away for 30 years, but is now back home pursuing her first love, art, and continues with her other passion, teaching. The past twenty five years were focused on teaching interior design, hand drawing/color rendering, and architectural drafting and as a college administrator at Baker College in Muskegon, Michigan. She continued painting and drawing during those years and is now teaching acrylic painting at Studio 23 in Bay City, the Midland Center for the Arts, and Art Reach in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, as well as teaching interior design at Central Michigan University and pursuing her art career.  She has created coloring books that are offered on Amazon and created a gallery showing of acrylic paintings that were based on her coloring book images, displayed at a 2019 show at 515 Gallery in Clare, Michigan.

Her work has been displayed in venues such as the Muskegon Museum of Art, the Fort Wayne Art Museum in Indiana, the National Artist League in New York, and Union Gallery in Chicago, Illinois, 55thAnnual Greater Michigan Art Exhibition at the Midland Center for the Arts, and a one-man show in the Hanchley Gallery, Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, Louisiana. One of her paintings was accepted for display at Art Reach in Mount Pleasant Michigan, for the 2019 Artwalk as well as being included in 50 Artists of Michigan, 2019, in Bay City.  In 2019, members of the Clare community purchased her work, Moonstruck Magic, to hang in the children’s area in the Pere Marquette District Library, Clare, Michigan. As Artist in Residence at 515 Gallery for the summer of 2019, Sylvia created and guided community volunteers in creating a mural in Art Alley, The Beauty of Butterflies.

She earned a Master Degree in Art at Northwestern University of Louisiana, and two bachelor degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design with a Minor in Architectural Technology, and a Bachelor of Business Leadership degree. Her work as a graduate student is still featured on NSULA’s website https://art.nsula.edu/student-images/.
