Curator’s Clipboard: Artists as collaborators!

Hi! It’s Val, curator of Studio 23! The artist Robert Rauschenberg has been a major influence in my life since art school. He lived between 1925–2008 and was very prolific in mixed media artwork involving printmaking, painting, photography, and performance art. He led the charge for many collaborations between visual artists, scientists, musicians, dancers and social activists and he strived to promote world peace and understanding. “There is no reason not to think of the world as one gigantic painting,” stated Rauschenberg in 1971. Not only does that quote speak to me of all the possible materials we can use in our artwork but also the big picture of defining collaboration as a complete creative process. Here are just a few of the collaborations we initiated at Studio 23 so far in 2020.

On January 25, Studio 23 collaborated with City Market Bay City for “A Taste of Art” held during the market’s Sample Saturday. Faculty members from our education department demonstrated drawing, painting, printmaking and offered a station for market-goers to do their own mini paintings. I’m happy to announce that this community event was successful and our collaboration will now be scheduled four times a year with the next “A Taste of Art” being on Saturday, April 25, 2020. Below you will see artists from left to right, Amy Gibas, Julie Tyslicky, Ruth Howell, Deb LaRocque, Misty Coss, all instructors at Studio 23.

Studio 23 is collaborating with Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy to present Land to River, an exhibit that features artists in the role of communicators, explorers and environmentalists. Artists include: Mark Bleshenski, Zachary Branigan, Frits Hoendervanger, Erwin Lewandowski, Alan Maciag, and John Sabraw. This exhibit will open on May 14, 2020 at 5:00pm. The topics of conservation, restoration, education, utilization and activation as it relates to over 6000 acres of land in our region will be addressed through the message of visual art with the opportunity for our community members to participate in workshops and environmental events. This exhibit is sponsored by Waste Management.

The Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra and Studio 23 presented Where Art and Music Unite, a collaboration that featured artist Valerie Allen painting to the music of Haydn, Torke, and Copland performed by the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra and led by Conductor Fouad Fakhouri. The painting was then auctioned at the afterglow for the evening. The collaboration also included a food drive for Hidden Harvest, a regional organization that strives to alleviate hunger and food waste in the counties of Bay, Midland and Saginaw.

Teenworks & Kids’ Kreations continues until March 7, 2020

Don’t miss this popular exhibit featuring the young artists of Bay County. The exhibit features over 375 creations by elementary, middle school and high school art students. We have a family-fun scavenger hunt for this exhibit and if you correctly answer the questions you will receive a label. Collect a label from each exhibit in 2020 and you will receive a prize in December. Gallery hours are Tuesday and Wednesday: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 11:00 am – 7:00 pm. We are closed Sunday and Monday.

Understory: Bonnie Lalley, artist and illustrator

March 19 – May 2, 2020

Bonnie Lalley is a full-time artist/illustrator and art professor at Delta College. She lives in the countryside by choice, as flora and fauna are the motifs she loves best. Her 100-year-old home and studio in the Thumb reflect her aesthetic with vintage colors and patinas. There will be large scale collages as well as mixed media works custom framed by artisan Timothy Lalley.

Meet our member, Leeds & Margaret Bird

Our newest addition of #meetourmembers of Studio 23.

Leeds & Margaret Bird have been a part of Studio 23 since the Little Red Schoolhouse. It all started with a lighting suggestion and then Leeds involved Margaret with the Studio with an exhibit opportunity.

I always have great conversations with both of them and enjoy their company when they attend receptions or events here at the Studio. The first question I asked was about their favorite exhibits that we have hosted throughout the years. One of Margaret’s favorites was when we hosted buddhist monks for a few days at the Studio. She said it “felt like you were in a sacred space while you watched them do their sand art.” It was a great interactive exhibit that you could watch for a few days that changed and evolved. Leeds mentioned our Dali exhibit that we hosted and how people were traveling from all over to see it at Studio 23. They both agreed that they enjoy our photography exhibits and how the community members show their personal artwork at Studio 23.

Close to 52 years of marriage, they have purchased many pieces at Studio 23. The first piece they purchased was before they got married at the Little Red Schoolhouse location. It only cost them $20 and it is a ceramic bowl that they still use today. It is really special that they have created years of memories with their collection of art from Studio 23.

One of Margaret’s favorite aspects of Studio 23 is the focus to collaborate with local art organizations. The more recent collaboration has been with Bay City Players. Both organizations have shown a couple art films to show how fine art and acting connect. During the Vincent film, we set up a photo booth that looked like Van Gogh’s bedroom. Attendees enjoyed being inside a scene from Vincent’s painting. For The Woman in Gold, Margaret hosted a book talk combing literature with art. Attendees were able to discuss the book and the journey of the art piece before they viewed the film at Bay City Players.

Leeds brought up the collaboration with Bay City Players and Studio 23’s art students. Our students helped design and paint the backdrops for the Jungle Book performance. Young students got to experience art with theatre design and see their pieces during the performance. A memorable experience for all.

Their advice for people wanting to getting involve with art organizations?

Just walk through the door. Ask if there is anything to do? Does it cost money?

It turns our that there is always something to do and it doesn’t cost a lot of money!

Meet our member, Alan Maciag

Our newest “meet our member” features Alan Maciag, an artist who has been involved with Studio 23 since he was 19 years old. I’m really enjoying these opportunities to get to know our members better and to show the community how you can be involved with your local arts organizations.

We started our chat by asking how his education career related to his art career. Al taught for the Frankenmuth school district, teaching art. During his education he learned many mediums to teach the kids, but as he was teaching he was also getting ideas for his own techniques. As a teacher it was his job to give his students the basics so they could have the skills to succeed.

Reminiscing on how Alan got involved with Studio 23 we ventured down memory lane. The Little Red School house was a memorable experience for Alan. He met local artists that he bonded with and learned from. Artists like, Dr Culver Jones and Don Coates, two original founders of Studio 23. Alan has great memories of working with them and attending receptions with them. The place to be was Studio 23 on a Friday night to celebrate the newest exhibit!

Alan is well known in our region for his style of plein air painting. He originally started painting houses in Frankenmuth, Petoskey and Charlevoix. He started selling prints to get his name out there. He knew that if people saw his name, they would remember it because it is unique. Now he is well known for his farm scenes and animals. Although he said he doesn’t paint horses, we know him for his cows and pigs! Currently Alan has over 300 paintings in different galleries around the state.

Networking with communities and galleries has really helped Alan’s art career. Social media is one of the most important ways for him to network. Check out his friends list, over 4,000! Social media is a great way to share the newest pieces you are working on and to celebrate when a piece sells. I know many of us love watching Alan’s newsfeed to see what he is working on next.

The advice Alan will give to artists is to find what you want to do. Think about what you know and maybe that will be what you create. For example, Alan started painting the farm scenes with memories of being at his grandparents home in the thumb. Artists should also start looking for groups that do the same medium. A lot of these groups, like us at Studio 23 have collectives and exhibit opportunities that you can be connected with.

When asked about his exhibit that he had at Studio 23 back in the early 2000s he has a very fond memory of shoes. Alan had his first solo show with us and wanted to pay homage to the people that influenced his life. For this series he asked each of those people to send him their shoes and he painted each pair. I wish I had a picture to show you, but I can imagine this scene in my mind. What a powerful statement to see their shoes and know that they made an influence on someone that was memorable. He spoke about how the families still own the paintings that he did, and one family even passes it around the siblings so they all can share the sentimental piece.

#meetourmember sessions are so fun to me. I love learning about why they feel Studio 23 is an important place to be. I encourage you to go out and create! Come to us when you are ready to find your tribe of artists and be a member of our great space.

February Fun at Studio 23!

Can you believe it is February?!

This week we officially kicked off our winter programing and our first exhibit of the year. Join us Thursday, February 6th from 4pm-7pm as we celebrate Teenworks & Kids’ Kreations sponsored by Wildfire Credit Union. This exhibit is one of our annual shows that we’ve been doing for years. The smiles on children’s faces, along with the proud parents and families make this one so much fun. During our reception we serve cookies and punch and even have some fun activities this year.

2020 is the year of engagement for Studio 23. We want to engage with our community and show you that art is for everyone. During each exhibit this year there will be an interactive part. For Teenworks & Kids’ Kreations there is a fun scavenger hunt that will lead you around the gallery looking for clues inside the artwork. Once you complete the challenge, we have an exhibition sticker, sponsored by Wildfire Credit Union that you can collect. If you come to each exhibit this year and collect all the stickers, there is a prize waiting for you in December!

As you may know, Studio 23 is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization providing the Great Lakes Bay Region with a vibrant arts center dedicated to making the visual arts relevant and accessible to all. We are currently in a membership campaign, encouraging you to join our art center! On our blog we are featuring members that support us and share how they take advantage of their membership. Check out Joanne’s and Amy’s posts and keep an eye out for more members each week.

For the rest of February we have workshops like LOVE by Robert Indiana, events like Expand Your Palette (Sip N’ Swirl 2.0) and Indulge open house with Downtown Bay City. Stop in and see us at Studio 23 for a fun scavenger hunt during our open hours and our exciting programing.

Expand Your Palette is a way to get out of your comfort zone with your friends. This event has been created to help you try some art and try some wine.

Four art stations will be placed around the gallery where you will experiment with printmaking, painting, collage and more. Think of this as an upgraded Sip N’ Swirl painting! You will leave with a piece of art that you can display in your home.

Art is not the only thing you get to expand: you will be expanding your wine palette as well. Tables will be set around the gallery with popular choices of wine, like merlot or chardonnay. When you visit the tables you will also see samples of wine that are not those options, opening your palette to other
flavors that are similar. This is a perfect way to expand your palette!

Light hors d’oeuvres will be supplied by Artigiano.

Meet our member, Amy Gibas

Studio 23’s mission is to provide the Great Lakes Bay Region with a vibrant arts center dedicated to making the visual arts relevant and accessible to all. It is our passion to connect artists with our local community and to engage our community with art!

This past week we sat down with Amy Gibas, a member of Studio 23 to talk about her journey with art and how Studio 23 helped connect her with artists right outside her studio doors.

Amy Gibas has been involved with Studio 23 since 2012, if our memory serves us correct! Amy taught Sip N’ Swirls at Studio 23, during her BFA program at Saginaw Valley State University. Then she moved on to complete her MFA at Ohio University. Luckily, we had Amy move back to our community to begin her career in the Great Lakes Bar Region. Right away she wanted to reconnect with the art community, to work alongside artists just like she did in school.

On FaceBook she saw a post for the 100 day project with Studio 23. This opportunity helped connect her with local artists and our Curator, Valerie Allen. Val and Amy shared a vision to create a group for artists that would help engage with one another, participate in professional development and notify each other of exhibition opportunities. Amy tells us that Studio 23’s Artist Collective was formed by the excitement around the first 100 day project.

You can be a part of the Artist Collective by becoming a member of Studio 23. Through the collective they host various events throughout the year, focusing on networking and professional development. They also have a private FaceBook page where they share information weekly on exhibit opportunities across the state and encouragement on artwork.

Amy’s best advice to up and coming artists is “Don’t give up and don’t sell out. Always make the work you are passionate about!”

Meet our member, Joanne Grabinski

On January 23rd we kicked off our membership campaign at Studio 23/The Arts Center by welcoming in our 100 Day Project. On Day One, we gained eight new members and three renewing members. What a great way to welcome in 2020!

The same day I sat down to chat with our friend, Joanne Grabinski. We enjoyed our conversation and I am so glad she has chosen Studio 23 as one of her galleries in our region.

I met Joanne three years ago when she applied for the 50 Artists of the Great Lakes Bay Region. It was our first year doing a call out for this show, so we were nervous here at Studio 23! Lucky for us we received a whooping 91 applications for only 50 guaranteed entries. The juries narrowed down the artists on a warm summer evening, picking Joanne as one of the 50. In Joanne’s word, “I took the leap off the high board and got accepted.” This exhibit was the perfect introduction of Studio 23 for Joanne. Not only was she displayed in our gallery, she participated in artists talks, a community art walk and other networking opportunities that we hosted during that time frame. We all at Studio 23 became fast friends with Joanne.

Now she is participating in her next 100 Day project with us at the Studio. The 100 Day Project is the commitment to create for ten minutes a day, for a continuous 100 Days. This is the third time we have offered this event at Studio 23 under the guidance of the official 100 Day Project. Joanne has completed both previous rounds and is participating with her third one this year. Her plan is to use the 100 Days to research women artists, in preparation for a Call to Artists. What a great way to use the 100 Day momentum!

Adventures in Art Education

Hi all!

Autumn here, Education Coordinator of Studio 23! January at the studio means we’re getting ready for winter classes to start! I’m so excited to offer our members some really great classes in drawing, painting, clay, and everything in between. I have some new workshops and classes that I really urge you take advantage of- they’re going to be so fun and so educational.

All of our winter classes and workshops are posted on our website and Facebook. We are currently taking signups and classes are filling up fast. My advice is if you want to ensure your spot in a particular class, sign up today!

Studio 23 Spotlight

A segment focused on the students and educators of Studio 23.

Jean Preston

Prolific. Prolific is a great word to describe Studio 23 student Jean Preston. The woman is a workhorse in the clay medium and man, she can crank out some beautiful work! Jean loves to work in functional pottery and has a very specific style- she LOVES texture! Watching her in the clay studio is fun because she knows exactly what she wants from the clay. Under the tutelage of Pat Lightfoot and Maureen Bokhart, Jean has really defined her style. Jean always seems to find a way to include beautiful pattern and texture to her pieces. While she was working in the clay room today I asked her “What does Studio 23 mean to you?” She had a long pause and a chuckle because she felt that was such a hard question. After a moment of pondering Jean shared this, “Studio 23 is a place I can come and relax. Always welcoming and always interesting stuff going on here.” She also mentioned that she has made a lot of new friends at Studio 23. I loved hearing that! It’s no secret that it becomes harder to make friends as we get older. So, to hear the classes I’ve created are bringing people together to form friendships… well, that just put a big ol’ smile on my face!

I didn’t want to interrupt Jean’s creative process for much longer so I just had one more question for her, “What’s your favorite part of Studio 23?” This question was much easier for her to answer, “The new clay studio! I just love the new renovations Studio 23 has made to the clay studio!” I smiled ear to ear on that reply, too! As a staff member of Studio 23 I hoped renovations would be well received but, you never really know until the dust has settled and students are back in classes.

Curator’s Clipboard: Happenings in our galleries and beyond!

Hi! It’s Val, curator of Studio 23! January is our time to refresh and renew our gallery space and plan new opportunities for artists of the region. Last year we organized the Studio 23 Artists Collective and we are thrilled at the response from our artist members of Studio 23. We hosted three plein air events, an info session on the 50 Artists of the Great Lakes Bay Region, a talk on abstraction for the realist artist and a private curator’s VIP tour of the 50 Artists exhibit.

This year we kick off with The 100 Day Project that actually was visualized and started by our Artists Collective. The 100 Day Project is designed to jump start your creative process for the new year as well as promote the habits that can enhance your artistic productivity. It is beneficial for all creatives including visual artists, performing artists, entrepreneurs and visionaries. Bring your questions, your project ideas and your notebooks to our check-ins that are scheduled every 25 days. Here is a link to our first check-in. This event will be held on January 22, 2020 starting at 5:30 pm at Studio 23. Studio 23 is one of several art organizations across the nation that start on January 22, 2020! The national site is The 100 Day Project and the concept originated in Marquette, Michigan. It is now international! You can register your project in advance at this international link for The 100 Day Project.

Our next exhibit will open on February 6, 2020. Teenworks and Kids Kreations celebrates the artwork created by young artists from Bay County. The age range is elementary through high school and the variety of images and depth of talent is incredible. Please join us for the opening public reception on February 6, 2020, 4:00pm – 7:00 pm. In addition, we will have a Sunday Open House on February 9, 2020, 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm. This event corresponds with the Indulge Day in Downtown Bay City!

Finally, we are happy to announce that Studio 23 is now placing art in our Regional Artists in Public Spaces program. The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is now our new neighbor on Water Street so it is very natural that we would place the beautiful abstract art by Sheri Moore into their busy boardroom. Sheri Moore is a graduate of Saginaw Valley State University. Her inspiration comes from human interaction and personal experience, especially travel. “I paint by feel, by trusting my gut, exactly the same way I have operated my whole life. I trust my instincts,” Sheri says.

Event at City Market Bay City! Saturday, Samples and Art, a fun collaboration between Studio 23 and City Market on Saturday January 25, 2020 gives you “a taste of art” from 11am – 3pm. Artists and Studio 23 instructors will be stationed throughout the market creating their artwork and ready to discuss their process as well as classes they teach and programs such as the 100 Day Project at Studio 23. There will also be an art station where you can create your own Paint n Take for $10. Our new class schedule and a registration station will also be available at this event for your convenience and classes will begin the week of February 3, 2020.

Welcome to 2020 at Studio 23!

Welcome to 2020!

The past year came and went so fast for us here at Studio 23. We are so thankful for a successful year of programs, workshops, and exhibits. A big accomplishment for us included our 60th Anniversary renovation. Can you believe that we have been your community arts center for that long? I know I can’t. The galleries and classrooms got a big facelift, and we are now able to host even more programing. We feel so lucky to be in a beautiful space every day. The new ceilings, lights, and floors feel like a modern art gallery you would see in a large city. If you haven’t been in to see the new space, please stop in. I’d love to show you around.

5,900 visitors walked through our galleries in 2019. The quality exhibits we hosted, the festivals downtown, and the programing we offered helped achieve that high count of visitors.

Art Around the City got a big expansion this past year. Public art is important, and because of this project you get to see 50 local artists on our rail trail systems in Downtown Bay City and Uptown Bay City.

We have a lot of ENGAGING activities for you in 2020. Can you tell we picked a theme word for 2020? Our mission is to make the visual arts relevant and accessible to all. The only way to do this is to engage with our community. New this year, there will be a hands-on art activity with each exhibit. Your current membership now gets four makers projects that you can do for FREE. Our artist collective, which every current member is a part of, has tons of programming ready to go. We really want you to think of our galleries and classrooms as a place to come and be creative and network with your community.

Please encourage friends and family to come walk through the gallery, take a class, or enjoy an event or festival. As always, my door is always open! Please stop in and say hi or reach out to me with any questions.

January 11, 2020 @ 3pm

Studio 23 and Artigiano Bay City as part of Downtown Bay City‘s Lifestyle + Wellness Weekend present an artist conversation with Ju-Yu “Louise” Chen on the Healing Power of Art. This informal presentation will be in Artigiano Artisan Cheese Shoppe at 815 Saginaw Street in Bay City. Louise will focus on one of her original watercolor paintings that has profound personal meaning for her. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the discussion.

January 15, 2020 from 6 pm – 9 pm

The Mandalorian Featured Sip ‘N Swirl w/Star Wars Trivia

If you’ve never heard of The Mandalorian, you’re not living on planet Earth! (Maybe you’re from Dathomir?) Join us for Star Wars trivia while we paint a picture including everyone’s favorite baby!

Expand Your Palette

February 20, 2020
4–6 pm, $30 per ticket

Expand Your Palette is a way to get out of your comfort zone with your friends. This event has been created to help you try some art and try some wine.

Four art stations will be placed around the gallery where you will experiment with watercolor, acrylic paint, colored pencil and mixed media. You will leave with a piece of art that you can display in your home!

Art is not the only thing you get to expand: you will be expanding your wine palette as well. Tables will be set around the gallery with popular choices of wine, like merlot or chardonnay. When you visit the tables you will also see samples of wine that are not those options, opening your palette to other
flavors that are similar. This is a perfect way to expand your palette!

Light hors d’oeuvres will be supplied by Artigiano.

Leeds & Margaret Bird have been a part of Studio 23 since the Little Red Schoolhouse. It all started with a lighting suggestion and then Leeds involved Margaret with the Studio with an exhibit opportunity.

Just walk through the door. Ask if there is anything to do? Does it cost money?

It turns our that there is always something to do and it doesn’t cost a lot of money!
