Priscilla Olson: Painting Michigan

Studio 23 welcomes oil painter Priscilla Olson for an exhibition of landscape paintings depicting the scenery throughout her home state of Michigan. Featured Artist for Black & White Affair 2023.

Priscilla Olson: Painting Michigan

I like wondering not so much knowing – about the subject. It is curiosity that compels me to choose my themes. My paintings represent the feeling of anticipation and mystery that the subject evokes in me. I enjoy viewing art that poses open questions. My goal is to create work that invites the viewer to imagine.

I grew up in Midland, Michigan, but spent my professional life in the Chicago area as a commercial animator and plein air painter. Since returning to Midland in 2011, I have been participating in painting events around the state. I continue to be an active plein air painter and enjoy sharing and promoting this activity throughout the Great Lakes Bay region.

Beyond Photography…
Featuring the work of Michael J Murphy

From his dreams of becoming a mortician at age twelve, to his high school job as a grave digger, Michael Murphy had a lifelong fascination with the macabre. His series of graveyard photography began in 2004 when he befriended the groundskeeper of a historic Philadelphia cemetery, and he spent the next 15 years actively seeking and photographing cemeteries everywhere he visited.

This exhibit of 70 images spans the cemeteries of five states and features the monuments and memorials created to commemorate the deceased. The photographs reveal how trends and style have influenced how we have memorialized our loved ones throughout time.
