Autism: A Visual Journey

Ann Vincenti-Michelman and Stories Solo Exhibits: Chandra Jewell and Tisch Mikhail Lewis

Autism: A Visual Journey When her 3-year-old daughter was diagnosed with autism, one way Ann Vincenti-Michelman coped was by assembling one tiny collage nearly every day. Over 10 years, she created 3,650. Ordered in a grid 5’h x 100’w, the collages constitute an intense “visual diary” that chronicles isolation, helplessness, and shared loss. This work expands viewers’ understanding of autism’s impact by experientially immersing them in the fragmentation that characterizes the disorder. Just as the artist and her daughter moved through real time in the tumultuous years over which this work was created, viewers move along the plane and try to piece together meaning. The collages are grouped in 31 thematic panels that function like pages of a book—some playful, others forboding. Techniques employed include painting, drawing, calligraphy, photography, weaving with textiles and with metal, and needlework. Dimensionality and the interplay of textures and shadows are integral features.

Studio 23 is very honored to exhibit this thought provoking installation in the Tabor Gallery throughout the holiday season. Ann Vincenti-Michelman will be a featured artist for our 2018 Black and White Affair on December 14, 2018.

Stories: Solo Exhibits will be on display in the Rowley Gallery of Studio 23. “The concept of the theme is to emphasize the unique thought process of artists as they create their stories in the form of photography, mixed media, and painting,” states curator Valerie Allen. “Both Chandra and Tisch are Great Lakes Bay Region artists who are contributing their artistic perspectives in our community.”
