The Jones Memorial Scholarship for the Visual Arts

In 1994, in memory of Dr. Culver Jones and his wife, Beatrice, The Jones Memorial Scholarship for the Visual Arts was established. Dr. Jones was a gifted artist himself, and he and his wife were dedicated and devoted to furthering the interest of the visual arts in Bay County.  Their support of Studio 23/The Arts Center, throughout the years, has contributed greatly to the growth and continued interest of the visual arts in our community. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize, encourage and assist students who wish to pursue a career in the visual arts.

This scholarship application will be judged by an independent selection committee and distributed by the Board of Directors of Studio 23. A $250 per semester ($500 per year) two (2) year scholarship will be awarded after the candidates have submitted a portfolio consisting of five(5) works of art.

  • Images of the artwork must be submitted digitally via email.  Please email them to mcoss@studio23baycity.org

  • The application must be received by Studio 23/The Arts Center by March 31, 2023.  901 North Water Street Bay City, MI 48708.

  • The scholarship recipient will be notified by April 15, 2023

Studio General Scholarship

Studio 23 offers scholarships to youth, teens, and adults every class season (Winter, Spring/Summer, and Fall). The purpose of the scholarship is to help foster art education and self-expression in the surrounding community. Art education is important in the development of problem solving skills and building confidence, as well as benefiting mental/physical/social health.

Awardees may choose one class at Studio 23 to participate in for one session, and must pay a $10 nonrefundable commitment fee to show they will attend class.

Students must supply their own supplies unless supplies are included in the class fee.

Students who choose to take clay classes may use reclaim/recycled clay if they cannot afford the $50 (adults) or $30 (children’s) clay/glaze fee. Payment plans available.

Applications are due Friday at noon (10 days) before the first session starts. Once applications are received, one week before the session starts, the Studio 23 Education Committee will review scholarships and make approvals of the appropriate candidates. One scholarship will be awarded in each age group per quarter (Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall).

If an awardee does not attend their class, they forfeit their ability to apply for scholarships in the future. If the student cannot make the committed classes, they can contact Studio 23 in advance of expected absences to make arrangements to prevent future restrictions.

The application must be received by Studio 23/The Arts Center by the due date.
