Metamorphosis of the Strands
Boisali Biswas
Coming from India, a country with a rich heritage of art and culture, I have always had a deep-rooted attachment to the traditional art forms of India, and I owe some of my stylization to the captivating traditional patterns and the rich array of colors. Adapting to Western styles and techniques and combining them with my lifelong fascination for ethnic arts around the world have been a melting pot for me to create a multicultural “canvas.”
This body of work with mainly translucent weaving is continually evolving, together with an effort to reclaim and repurpose discarded materials whenever I can. The idea of working with translucent weaving has emerged quite naturally for me, having a love affair with a very traditional yet simple inlay technique from India and Bangladesh, ever since I have been weaving. Currently, it has become a tool for my art, with a focus on creating an environment with the delicate weaving and the shadows it creates.
Having lived outside my home country for more than half my life and traveling to other countries has exposed me to many different cultures and human landscapes. I contemplate how these cultures are bound together by the warp and weft of civilization, how we are wrapped in cloth ever since our inception!
